Germany suffered another early exit from the World Cup after losing on penalties to Paraguay on Monday, but manager Jurgen Klopp has been approached to replace Julian Nagelsmann.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is open to becoming Germany’s next manager, amid intense speculation over Julian Nagelsmann’s future. Germany suffered a shock defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Monday and was expelled from the World Cup.

The four-time champions lost on penalties, but a potential winning goal was controversially canceled out in extra time. Nagelsmann, 38, did not resign and insisted he was contracted until the next European Championship in 2028, which will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

However, there have been strong calls for Klopp to take over as manager, and there are reports that he has been approached. The 59-year-old has not coached since leaving Liverpool in May 2024, a decision he made after admitting he did not have the “energy” to continue with the day-to-day challenges that come with being a Premier League manager.

The Telegraph reports that Klopp is ready to replace Nagelsmann if the German Football Federation (DFB) pulls the trigger. It has been claimed that one of Klopp’s remaining ambitions in the football world is to manage the World Cup.

However, the report adds that any agreement between Klopp and the DFB will come with a caveat. The former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz manager is unlikely to want to spend every weekend sitting in the stands watching players at club level.

In January 2025, Klopp started working as Red Bull’s global head of football. He oversees the Red Bull Network of soccer clubs, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls.

Klopp was working as a commentator for German broadcaster Magenta during this summer’s World Cup and was asked about his position following his country’s withdrawal. “I understand that my name has been mentioned,” he replied. “But now is not the time to talk about it. And certainly not with me.”

Manager Klopp will be tasked with returning Germany to its former glory. After winning the World Cup in Brazil eight years ago, they were eliminated in the group stage twice and are now eliminated in the last 32.

Coach Nagelsmann admitted, “It’s not enough for German football to leave after the first stage.” “This is our third loss in a row and we are no longer part of a first-class team. It’s disappointing.”
