Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is Tottenham Hotspur’s main summer transfer target, but the Magpies want more than £100m to part with Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Tottenham Hotspur have offered Sandro Tonali a huge £86m, six-year deal from Newcastle United.
Spurs have identified the Italy international as their top target this summer, and it is understood that after negotiations with agent GR Sports, they have agreed a personal package with the player worth £275,000 a week.
However, Tottenham still need to negotiate a deal with the Magpies for a move to become a reality. Spurs had an offer of £80m for Tonali rejected earlier this month and were told to repay him for a higher sum.
Unlike the current buzz surrounding midfield partner Bruno Guimarães and Arsenal, at least Spurs have made a concrete offer to Newcastle rather than a leak from a third party.
Newcastle are determined to stick to their transfer plans and have processes in place to get a deal done regardless of financial constraints. But while they are keen to keep Tonali, a big-money sale would open the door for head coach Eddie Howe and sporting director Ross Wilson.
Tonali joined from AC Milan in 2023 for £55m. Newcastle are keen to get £100m, close to double what they paid.
If Spurs were to sign Tonali for the amount Newcastle are demanding, they would break the transfer record. They paid £51.8 million to sign Xavi Simmons from RB Leipzig last summer.
And when bonuses are included, it adds up to an astonishing outlay for Spurs to get the job done, worth £200m in wages, bonuses, signing fees and the amount owed to Newcastle United.
Interestingly, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi is believed to be close to Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Rizzo, who has previously spoken about Tonali’s possible departure. Asked in March about a potential move from Tyneside to Arsenal or Manchester City, Riso said: “That was exactly the goal from the moment he went to England, to try to make him a star player. I think he is one of the most highly valued Italian footballers in the world.”
“This deal came about because a club with unlimited resources like Newcastle decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having him play at a higher level.”
Asked if Newcastle would sell Tonali this summer, chief executive David Hopkinson said three months ago:
“However, if a scenario like Isak’s occurs again, players under contract will leave on our terms and we will make the most of any opportunities that may be presented to the club.”
