BBC pundit Danny Murphy paid a bizarre tribute to his cat Bob during the World Cup Round of 32 match between Ivory Coast and Norway. A co-commentator revealed that the pet went missing after jumping into the back of a Royal Mail van after a hydration break.
With substitute Oscar Bobb brought on in the second half, Murphy shared a personal anecdote. Norway were leading 1-0 when the Fulham player came on for former Crystal Palace forward Alexander Soros. Murphy grabbed a quiet spell during the proceedings to mention his cat, but lead commentator Steve Bower didn’t seem too keen.
Bob entered the fray and immediately touched the ball, causing Bower to remark, “This is Bob’s first involvement.”
Norway tried to send the ball forward without success, and after 10 seconds of silence, Murphy interjected: “I had a cat named Bob.”
Bower replied, “The match isn’t that bad,” but his colleague continued. “Oh, he jumped into the back of the Royal Mail van and we lost him.”
“It’s really sad. Just,” Murphy concluded with a laugh.
After another pause for commentary, Coach Bower said, “Anyway, with 18 minutes left, Ivory Coast needs a goal,” and proceeded with the game.
Fortunately for the African side, Ivorian sensation Amad Diallo scored just 60 seconds later, canceling out their rivals’ lead just before the interval courtesy of Antonio Noussa.
Erling Haaland eventually restored Norway’s advantage with four minutes remaining, sealing their place in the round of 16.
Murphy’s comments prompted a polarized reaction across social media, with not everyone convinced.
One user sarcastically commented: “Interesting analysis of Danny Murphy,” while another wondered: “Sorry but how is Danny Murphy a real commentator?”
Many also noted similarities to Alan Partridge. “Danny Murphy is pure partridge,” wrote one X account, while another agreed: “Best commentary ever on Danny Murphy. Total partridge.”
One person questioned the validity of the entire story, writing, “Do you think this must be some version of what his parents told him to ‘quit living on the farm’? This needs to be a full podcast about the crime that actually happened. Justice for Bob.”
But Murphy drew praise from certain demographics. One viewer enthused, “I can’t believe it. The comedic timing of ‘Really Sad’ is perfect. Danny Murphy, I didn’t know your game.”
