Newcastle face a battle to retain their top players, with interest in both Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães potentially leading to big-money moves.

Jamie Carragher believes Newcastle could make a big-money move after Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães have both been linked with departures.

The Magpies have already seen Anthony Gordon leave this summer, with the winger heading to Barcelona, but more key players could be on their way as they face a worrying exodus.

Tonali was linked with a move from St James’ Park in January and had already been subject to a rejected bid from Tottenham. Arsenal and Manchester City are also interested in the Italian, who is seen as the Newcastle midfielder most likely to leave.

However, there has recently been talk of Guimarães leaving the club despite being Newcastle’s captain. Arsenal are assessing the situation and Carragher believes the Magpies could end up signing their highest-paid player, with both players worth around £100m.

The former Liverpool star told Sky Sports: “Last season was not a great season for them, but now it feels like the team is disbanded. Anthony Gordon has left, but it looks like Tonali could leave. I think Arsenal will also have an offer for Bruno Guimarães today.”

“Guimarães is a great player. He’s loved over there. Maybe he’s a little frustrated seeing all his mates connected to the move or looking like they’re going to go. And maybe he put out a story or maybe he and his mates did that, I don’t know, or maybe it’s a genuine bid from Arsenal.”

“I understand that. As I said, I think he can play in the first team. He’s currently playing in central midfield for Brazil in the World Cup, so that shows the quality that this player has. But if Anthony Gordon leaves and Tonali leaves, I think it’s probably too much to lose any more, really.”

“I think Guimarães and Tonali both leave big holes for Newcastle to fill, so they’ll probably lose one of them and it’ll probably come down to who gets offered more money.”

Newcastle’s Saudi owners made a jubilant start when they took over the club, but some have questioned their commitment to the project in the north-east.
