Manchester United look set to join Arsenal and Barcelona in transfer battle for Atletico Madrid’s Julián Alvarez
Manchester United have reportedly made direct contact with Julian Alvarez’s agent. The transfer row surrounding the Atletico Madrid star has intensified in recent days following his explosive announcement of his departure, scathing comments against Barcelona and the rejection of two big-money bids.
Both of these approaches came from Atlético’s La Liga rivals, with Real Madrid publicly confirming that an offer of €150m (about £129m) was rejected, while Barça also had a similarly high bid rejected. To orchestrate the transfer, Alvarez made a shocking confession during World Cup duty with Argentina.
In an interview with ESPN, the player said: “For me it’s best to move and I want to make my dream come true. I don’t want to hide it or pretend that I don’t want to be clear. I’m trying to be honest. I’ve also spoken to the people at Atlético and I think it’s best for everyone involved for me to leave.”
Diego Simeone’s side have no intention of negotiating with Barcelona regarding Alvarez, according to the latest reports coming out of Spain.
This made Arsenal appear to be the frontrunners to sign him, but United have now entered the fray. According to Diario AS journalist Marcos Duran, United held discussions with Alvarez’s agent after monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation.

He added that United have the funds to deploy now that they have Champions League football, and that his impressive displays at rivals Manchester City have clearly influenced United’s thinking.
The Argentine scored 36 goals in 103 appearances at the Etihad Stadium, often playing second fiddle behind Erling Haaland. Since then, he has established himself as Atlético’s key man, which explains the huge interest in securing his services.
Having significantly strengthened the attacking line last summer, manager Michael Carrick’s priority for the 2026/27 season is to strengthen the midfield.
Ederson has already been agreed to join from Atalanta, with West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes also a firm target.
Spurs have since been identified as potential suitors for his signature, and although United face stiff competition from Roberto De Zerbi’s side, they appear well-placed to meet the Hammers’ valuation and Fernandes’ wage expectations.
Arsenal have also been linked with the Portuguese midfielder, but their current focus is on Lille’s Ayyoub Bouadi and Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães.
His club team-mate Sandro Tonali has similarly attracted attention from both North London clubs, with the Italian backing the Gunners but remaining open to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
