Manchester City are close to finalizing a deal for Elliott Anderson, but Newcastle believe Sandro Tonali will be next on their transfer list

Newcastle are set to step up Manchester City’s interest in Sandro Tonali if Elliott Anderson’s transfer is officially confirmed.

Etihad officials have signed the Nottingham Forest midfielder for a total of £116m, but the move is expected to become permanent once he undergoes a medical, which is expected to take place after this weekend’s match between England and Panama.

Despite spending the club’s biggest transfer fee ever for Anderson, City are prepared to continue investing in their midfield. Tonali has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park and Tottenham came to the negotiating table after their initial bid was rejected.

Once the focus shifts from Anderson to Newcastle, City believe they will step up efforts to sign the Italian, who is valued at £100m. According to the Telegraph, City have been tracking Tonali for over a year and the player is aware of their interest.

Tottenham had an initial offer of around £75m rejected last week and although the two clubs continue to hold talks, no second offer has yet been made. Tonali is open to a move to London and loves playing for Roberto De Zerbi, but he would be equally happy to consider a move to Manchester.

Newcastle have already signed Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona for £70 million. The Magpies accept that one of their key players is always likely to leave, so they are in the right position financially, but want to avoid a departure.

Last summer, they lost Alexander Isak in a turmoil that dragged on for months and affected their recruiting and retention plans.

Selling Bruno Guimarães would be a hugely unpopular decision for Tyneside

Bruno Guimarães is their captain and a player they will be sad to lose, despite some mild interest from Arsenal.

Like Tonali, the Brazilian will not be allowed to leave for less than £100m. The former Lyon man has forged a huge bond with the club’s fan base and is perhaps loved more than any other player in the team.

Guimarães has spoken of his love for the club and, although Newcastle are aware of their interest in him, he is far less likely to leave St James’ Park than Tonali.
