Arsenal have been given a swift response to their transfer interest in Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães – with the Magpies determined to keep the Brazilian.
Newcastle claim captain Bruno Guimarães cannot be sold as a Brazilian star in Arsenal’s circle.
The Gunners have been monitoring his performances for several years and there is little doubt that there is interest in the 28-year-old. They are now looking to back up their admiration for the former Lyon man and could make a big bid that would blow away Newcastle.
Arsenal sources have suggested that additional support will be needed to secure the player’s contract, as Arsenal’s interest has not yet been formally investigated. However, the Daily Mail reports that the Gunners have already held talks with the player’s agent.
However, the Chronicle understands that Newcastle have no intention of selling one of their key players, who provided two assists in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Scotland and is currently on the road with Brazil at the World Cup.
Newcastle are aware that the mounting speculation has worried supporters, but their initial position on Guimarães is firm that he will not be sold.
The Magpies have not received a formal approach or concrete offer for the player, who has a release clause of at least £100m in 2024. Despite reported interest from Manchester City, Newcastle never received a bid close to that figure for the midfielder.
However, Guimarães spoke frankly about Newcastle’s fall from fifth to 12th place in the Premier League. In March he said: “For next season, to be honest, I think the team is a little short, so I think we need more players.

“As we also experienced when we played in the Champions League last year, we lost some players to injuries and then it was busy for us. Next year we have one more game in our season, so I think we can improve the level. We need to work hard now and have a nice break. Of course we need to improve, but we are very, very happy.”
Newcastle have already seen one of their key players leave this summer, with Anthony Gordon joining Barcelona for £70m. If they do end up losing their central midfielder, it is expected that Sandro Tonali, rather than Guimarães, will seek pastures new like Tottenham’s circle.
