However, Tottenham appear to be the only club currently actively interested in signing Tonali. Last week, Roberto De Zerbi’s side are said to have turned down an offer of around £80m. Undaunted, the club returned to St James’ Park looking exactly the same, and reportedly received the same reaction.
The Mail claims Spurs have only asked Newcastle to reconsider their original stance and the Magpies have refused to change their position. Newcastle are thought to be asking for close to £100m for the 26-year-old this summer, but no acceptable package has yet been put forward.
The Tyneside club are in no particular hurry to offload their midfield star, given he still has two years left on his current contract, meaning Spurs may need to meet his valuation if they want to sign Tonali before the start of the new season.
It comes as the Lodi-born star is thought to be looking for a new challenge for the 2026/27 season after a disappointing season on Tyneside. Despite Spurs finishing 17th in the Premier League table compared to Newcastle’s 12th place, the club are working hard to strengthen their first-team squad for next season.
Having already brought in Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke, the Lilywhites appear to be targeting midfield reinforcements, especially given that Lukas Bergvall appears to be heading for the exit. But Tonali is not the only central midfielder to have been linked with a move to north London in recent weeks.
Alex Scott and Matheus Fernandes have also been linked with joining De Zerby next season, but it seems unlikely at this stage for either player. AFC Bournemouth have made it clear to officials that Scott will not be available this summer as they want to retain their valuable asset for at least another year.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are thought to have agreed personal terms with West Ham for Fernandes, and only need to meet the Hammers’ valuation of £85m to make the move happen.
