Manchester United are eyeing a £50m transfer fee for West Ham winger Crisencio Somerville, who boosted his stock by scoring two goals in two games for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt has backed the move for World Cup star Crisencio Somerville. Somerville, 24, has been the subject of interest from United, who recently made inquiries.
West Ham are expected to ask around £50m for the Dutchman, especially after his form in North America. Somerville has scored two goals in as many games as the Dutch national team, his most recent coming in a 5-1 thrashing of Sweden on Saturday.
His prolific form at West Ham at the start of the calendar year, although he has not been able to maintain his form, increases the chances of him continuing for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Despite this, Butt has told United to pursue a deal for Somerville.
In an interview with Paddy Power, Butt explained: “He’s an explosive player and deserves attention, but I don’t think he’s consistent enough. But they don’t need a lot of money to sign him, United need to build the squad.”

“It’s not all about signing a superstar. Somerville did well for the Dutch national team in his first game and could potentially start every week for Manchester United. I look at him and think he has to be more consistent to get to the next level, but we would definitely still look at signing a player like him.”
The former Red Devils midfielder added: “We have to strengthen the squad and the bench has to get stronger. When you play in the team and look at the starting eleven, to have four more coming on and being able to make a difference is huge.”
“Last season, when United played Leeds at Old Trafford and lost, the players on the bench and the players around the team weren’t good enough. They’re really good if everyone’s fit, but we still need to build the team, so I’ll buy players like that too.”

Somerville, who joined from Leeds in 2024, is in contact at the London Stadium until 2031. The winger is not the only West Ham player United are interested in. Portuguese midfielder Matheus Fernandes is a target, with Arsenal and Tottenham also on their shortlists.
