Chelsea have denied speculation that they are ‘monitoring’ Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz, with club officials rubbishing rumors about a reunion between the Germany international and new Blues manager Xabi Alonso.
Xabi Alonso has no plans to reunite with Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirths at Chelsea this summer.
Alonso worked with Wirtz during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, and the Blues’ next manager put in one of the best performances we’ve seen from the German international to date. His performances under Alonso led to a £116m move to Liverpool last summer, but things have not gone well for the former Leverkusen attacker at Anfield so far.
The 23-year-old played 49 games in all competitions for the Reds during his first training camp in England, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists. Talk of a reunion has always felt inevitable since Alonso made his first Premier League debut with Chelsea.
According to a report, Chelsea are “monitoring” Wirtz and could move him this summer depending on Enzo Fernandes’ progress. However, football.london passed it on to a source close to the west London outfit, who has muddled it.

Chelsea are targeting at least two first-team-level signings to strengthen Alonso’s squad ahead of the 44-year-old’s first training camp at Stamford Bridge.
A number of players have been linked with West London players in recent weeks, but sources close to the club told football.london a few days ago that there is no truth to the rumors regarding John Stones, Ethan Nwaneri and Lucas Bergvall. Wirtz is the latest addition to that growing list.
Although far-fetched, the link is understandable given Wirtz and Alonso’s history at Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz enjoyed the most prolific years of his young career under the Spanish manager, scoring 38 goals and providing 43 assists in 119 games.
The creative freedom Alonso gave his star attacking midfielder was notable and was greatly appreciated by Wirtz. “I feel very valued under him,” he said in November 2023.
“I feel trust, which is very important, especially as a young player. He gives me a lot of freedom on the pitch and always gives me hints about what I can do better.”
Alonso was rumored to have been linked with Liverpool before moving to west London, but he was eventually transferred to his old club manager Andoni Iraola after they sacked manager Arne Slott, who finished fifth in the Premier League.
Therefore, it will be Iraola, not Alonso, who will be tasked with bringing out the best in the German players. The former Bournemouth manager will no doubt be hoping to return to Anfield full of confidence after the World Cup.
Wirtz has started in the two games against Germany so far, and coach Julian Nagelsmann has great confidence in him. He assisted Felix Nmeka’s opening goal and played the full 90 minutes in the 7-1 win over Curaçao, and then played the full 90 minutes against Ivory Coast.
However, it was Dennis Unduff who stole the show in Toronto, scoring two goals after coming on as a substitute, helping Germany come from behind to win 2-1 and secure a place in the finals.
