As Andoni Iraola undergoes a transformation, how can Liverpool line up with Victor Muñoz and Yan Diomande?

Liverpool struggled last season under manager Arne Slott and the club are determined to refresh their squad in the off-season. Andoni Iraola has taken over as head coach and the team is undergoing a gradual overhaul.

With Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate leaving the club, with Virgil van Dijk and Alisson remaining, serious efforts are underway to rebuild the club. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last season under Slott and lost 19 games in all competitions in 2025/26.

What used to be dynamic and intense is now ponderous and predictable. It was clear that there were problems across the pitch, but the lack of productivity on the flanks was a major problem.

Salah’s departure leaves a big hole to fill on the right flank, but an injury to Hugo Ekitike, doubts over Federico Chiesa’s future and a reluctance to rely too much on 17-year-old Rio Ngmoja have made strengthening the wing a priority.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes wasted no time in moving to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna for €40 million (approximately £34.6 million). The 22-year-old is an exciting addition, having signed a six-year deal ahead of Newcastle, Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United and Real Madrid.

He made 36 appearances for Osasuna last season after joining from Real Madrid, scoring seven goals and providing five assists, and has exactly the profile Liverpool are coveting. Namely, speed, directness, and versatility.

Munoz is right-handed and usually plays on the left wing, but is also comfortable playing on the opposite flank or in the middle. He is particularly dangerous to run into space on counter-attacks, and Muñoz should charm the home supporters after the Anfield crowd went crazy with Ngmoha’s dribbling ability.

The signing of Muñoz, who could replace Luis Diaz, does not affect the signing of Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old winger remains Liverpool’s top transfer target this summer, but it will be far more difficult to secure a deal.

RB Leipzig are determined to keep hold of the Ivorian star, who is currently playing in the World Cup. Liverpool are reportedly willing to pay 100 million euros (approximately 8.65 billion yen) for Diomande, but Leipzig want even more money for the player, who was signed from Leganes last summer for just 17.3 million pounds.

If Liverpool convince Leipzig to sell and beat off competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Diomand will have the difficult role of replacing Salah on the right wing. Unlike Salah, Diomande is right-handed and has played on both flanks for Leipzig.

After Diomande scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 36 appearances in his debut season at Leipzig, his ability to make a difference at the top end of the pitch has become Liverpool’s biggest attraction.

Alexander Isaac of Sweden

The space on the right is completely empty, with Salah leaving after nine years at the club and Florian Wirths becoming more comfortable in a central position. They already have Kodi Gakpo, Ngmoha and Ekitike on the left, but the futures of Chiesa and Harvey Elliott also still need to be resolved.

Iraola will be required to get the best out of his current squad, with Alexander Isak’s improvement likely being one of his priorities after he was hit by injury in his debut season following his move from Newcastle. The Sweden international has had a bright start to the World Cup season, but if he can get through pre-season injury-free, he will be able to thrive with two talented young wingers on either side and Wirtz behind him.

Here’s how Liverpool will set up their lineup for next season, with new players on each wing and Jérémy Jacquet, signed for £60m in January, replacing Konate at centre-back.

2026/27 Liverpool eleven candidate: Alisson. Frimpong, Van Dijk, Jacquet, Kerkes. Graben Birch, Mac Allister, Wirtz. Diomande, Muñoz, Isaac.
