England captain Harry Kane equaled two of the Three Lions’ all-time records following Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas and has already made contact with David Beckham.
Harry Kane has revealed that David Beckham was the first person to congratulate him on being part of England’s history. England captain Kane’s appearance against Croatia equaled Beckham’s record of 115 caps, making him tied for third on the all-time list behind Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney.
Kane also equaled Gary Lineker’s World Cup goal record of 10 goals, with the Bayern Munich superstar capable of breaking both landmarks in this tournament.
England striker Kane admitted it was “shocking” to go from being an admirer of Beckham to receiving messages from the Three Lions legend.
Kane told the FA’s Lion’s Den Show: “I’m very proud to be among those names. David Beckham was my idol growing up, he’s any hero, we’re both from Chingford, we went to the same school, so he was just my idol.”
“To get the same number of caps as him now is quite daunting to be honest. I haven’t really accepted this. I’m just going to move on to the next thing. That’s certainly something I’ll take when I stop and look back.”
“Yesterday, David sent me some nice voice notes before and after the game, congratulating me on reaching 115 points. He said he knew how difficult it is to win that many caps consistently, so he was really happy and wished all the players the best of luck.”
“Every time I’ve met him or talked to him, he’s been a very nice guy. You can tell he’s a fan of the team. He really wants us to do well, so every interaction I’ve had with him has been great.”
“It’s a bit of a full-circle moment because he sees us as fans. I’m sure he’ll still be the same in 20 years. He’s a great role model for all of us.”
“And we all know what a good striker he was, especially at the World Cup, scoring goals and being comparable to Gary. So to get to 10 goals is obviously really pleasing and I can’t wait to get going again because the next game is just a few days away and I feel good and ready.”
