Andoni Iraola is said to have played a pivotal role in Liverpool sealing the deal for Victor Muñoz this summer.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the Reds were set to beat Newcastle United to sign the 22-year-old Osasuna forward.

Liverpool agreed to meet the release clause in Munoz’s contract with La Liga and signed a deal worth £34.5 million for Munoz.

Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Newcastle were thought to be in contention for Muñoz, but Liverpool beat out their rivals to bring the winger to Anfield.

Muñoz is understood to have agreed a six-year contract to become a Liverpool player and underwent a medical on Wednesday afternoon while on duty with Spain in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Muñoz becomes Iraola’s first signing as Liverpool manager, with details now emerging of the new head coach’s key role in the move.

The Daily Mail reported that Liverpool had been eyeing the signing of Munoz for some time, but have significantly stepped up their recruitment efforts since Iraola took over as manager.

According to reports, Muñoz featured heavily in Liverpool’s summer transfer plans and was given the green light to move due to Iraola’s extensive knowledge of the La Liga market.

Munoz may not be Liverpool’s only forward addition this summer, with the Reds’ interest in RB Leipzig star Yann Diomande understood to be unstoppable even with Osasuna’s pursuit of the forward.

Leipzig remain reluctant to sanction Diomande’s departure this summer, with reports suggesting the Bundesliga club values the 19-year-old at around €100m (about £86.5m).

Liverpool will be keen to closely monitor Munoz’s performances at this summer’s World Cup to see if the forward can add to the two international caps he has already earned.

Muñoz was on the bench during Spain’s goalless draw with Cape Verde in their tournament opener in Atlanta on Monday, but will be hoping to see some action in the remaining Group H match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
