Marcus Rashford was expected to leave Manchester United permanently this summer, but it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will still try to retain the attacking force.
Marcus Rashford has a release clause in his contract that allows him to leave Manchester United for £40 million this summer, allowing him to join any club other than Liverpool or Manchester City.
The 28-year-old is currently involved in the World Cup with England, but his long-term future after the tournament is uncertain after Barcelona decided not to activate their permanent contract option after acquiring Rashford on an initial loan deal last summer.
Barça’s agreement with Manchester United allowed Barça to sign Rashford for a whopping £26 million. Instead, the Spanish champions signed England team-mate Anthony Gordon in a deal worth £70 million.
With the deal taken off the table, Rashford is effectively back on the market, but suitors will have to pay a higher price for his services than Barcelona.
The Athletic have revealed that Rashford, who has two years left on his contract, includes a £40m release clause that is open to all clubs except Manchester United’s two biggest domestic rivals.
Rashford, who racked up 28 goal contributions for Barcelona last season, is said to already have a number of Premier League clubs “expressing interest”.
However, the paper added that if Rashford were to play in the Premier League next season, it would be with his boyhood club rather than another English team.
If Rashford does decide to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer, Crisencio Somerville is a player Manchester United could target to increase their attacking options.
The West Ham winger has been in the spotlight following the club’s relegation to the Premier League and has already been in the spotlight at the World Cup, scoring a superb goal for the Dutch national team in a 2-2 draw with Japan.
West Ham could lose a top-class player due to relegation, but Somerville could still command a transfer fee of around £50m, which could be a bottleneck. Manchester United’s priority in the transfer window remains to revamp their midfield options, with Somerville’s teammate Matheus Fernandes a top target.
