Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali has become one of the Premier League’s hottest midfielders, with Tottenham keen to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham have emerged as the latest Premier League side to make a move for Sandro Tonali, with the midfielder looking set to become Newcastle’s second player to be sold for a big sum in the summer transfer window.

Interest in Tonali from Newcastle’s domestic rivals dates back to the winter transfer window, when the Italian left-fielder was linked with a move to Arsenal, but the player’s agent initially tried to ignore the talk.

Since then, Manchester United are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old, with him being one of the options being considered as part of plans to revamp their midfield.

Newcastle are likely to lose Tonali and other top stars after a difficult 2025-26 season, while Tottenham also appear to be preparing to sign a playmaker.

According to reports in Italy on Monday night, Spurs are now heavily linked with the race to sign Tonali, who has been hailed by his compatriot Roberto De Zerbi.

It remains to be seen whether Tonali will want to move to Tottenham after they also had a disappointing season, but De Zerbi’s appointment has been well-received as he aims to return Tottenham to the upper echelons of the Premier League.

The former Brighton manager saved Tottenham from relegation but an unwanted brush in the Championship has not dampened the club’s ambitions. Signing a player of Tonali’s caliber ahead of some of the Premier League’s top clubs would be a real statement of intent.

Spurs have wasted no time in strengthening their squad since the end of the season, adding Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively. They are also looking to pull off an ambitious raid on Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Tonali’s deal is likely to exceed the £70m Newcastle made available when they agreed to sell Anthony Gordon to Barcelona last month.

The England winger departed for his country at the World Cup after completing a dream move to Camp Nou, but he is unlikely to be the only high-profile star to leave St James’ Park this summer.

As well as speculation regarding Tonali, the likes of Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimarães and Tino Libramento have also been linked with transfers in recent weeks.
