England will complete their training camp in Florida later this week before their final World Cup preparation match against Costa Rica will be played in Orlando on Wednesday night.
England’s World Cup camp was affected by a record earthquake just days before the final warm-up match.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are based in Florida and are preparing for the start of the tournament, which begins on June 17th against Croatia. But on Monday night, the area was hit by a 6.1 Richter scale earthquake off the coast of Cuba.
And even though the epicenter was more than 240 miles away, the quake was felt throughout Orlando and other parts of Florida.
The Richter scale 6.1 earthquake struck off the west coast of Cuba and shook Orlando and other parts of Florida.
Videos circulating on social media showed buildings shaking due to the tremor, but there were no reports of injuries or property damage.
The National Weather Service also announced that there is no danger of a tsunami hitting the United States.
“We have received several recent reports of shaking across Southwest Florida within the past 30 minutes. The earthquake occurred in the southern Gulf Coast, just west of Cuba. @USGS_Quakes has since revised the magnitude downward to magnitude 6.1 at a depth of 10 km,” said a statement released on social media.
In addition to Orlando, the shaking was felt in Miami and Jacksonville, and several buildings that began shaking were evacuated for safety.
England face Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday night before heading to their home state of Missouri in the coming weeks. Tuchel opted for his team to acclimate to Florida’s sweltering heat, hoping his players would be ready for the second half of the tournament.
“It’s going to be a tough game. I hope it’s a long World Cup. There’s going to be a lot of travel, there’s going to be a lot of adversity: heat, humidity. Practice was already delayed by almost an hour because of the lightning,” he said.
“But that’s also the challenge for us and what we want to achieve. To remain calm, patient and adaptable to the situation. I think that’s what we need to do to get through the tournament.”
Tuchel played two very different XIs against New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday night, but hinted on Wednesday night that he could be closer to the squad he will field when the games start.
England’s players had a day of rest and recovery on Sunday before returning to full training on Monday.
