Middlesbrough have paid tribute to Anthony Renton following the death of their former player. Renton sadly passed away at the age of 27 after a nine-year battle with leukemia.

The defender came through Boro’s academy before coaching at the North East club. They described him as a “beacon of positivity” in a moving statement.

Middlesbrough wrote: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of former academy player Anthony Renton. An inspirational figure, Anthony bravely battled leukemia for almost nine years and never let it dampen his love for our game.”

“Anthony is a promising defender who had just signed his first professional contract with Boro when he was first diagnosed with leukemia in July 2017. “Despite facing many challenges and setbacks as a result of his battle with cancer, Anthony has remained a positive beacon.

“He spent much of his later years as a coach, including during his time at our academy. His dedication to supporting the development of young footballers on and off the pitch will always be remembered and left a lasting legacy for so many children and their families across Teesside.”

“Anthony’s contributions were recognized when he was named the first recipient of the MFC Academy Alumni Award in March 2026. Anthony passed away peacefully over the weekend at the age of 27. Our thoughts are with Anthony’s family and friends at this devastating time.”

Renton was just 18 years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of blood cancer. Middlesbrough’s first-team players showed their support for him by wearing T-shirts with his name on them while warming up for the first game of the 2017/18 season.

Renton also coaches young players with the South Park Rangers, and RH Coaching posted on social media:

“Despite everything, he always found a way to keep going. No one should have to go through what Ansu went through over the last 10 years, especially at such a young age.

“His dedication to supporting the development of young players both on and off the pitch will leave a lasting impact on many children and families. The world of football has lost one of its great players and he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who knew Ansu at this incredibly difficult time.

“Anse, you will be sorely missed. Thank you for everything you have done for me, my children, and everyone around me. Rest in peace, my friend.”
