Divock Origi announces retirement at the age of 31, becoming the Belgian player best remembered for scoring in the Champions League during his time at Liverpool.

Liverpool icon Divock Origi has announced his retirement, insisting that his “purpose in the game as a player has been achieved”.

The Belgian scored for the Reds in the 2019 Champions League final, but it was just one of several memorable goals during his time with the Merseysiders. A few weeks earlier, Origi had also scored in an iconic comeback against Barcelona in the semi-final at Anfield.

He is now 31 years old and leaves the game with his name firmly etched into Liverpool lore, especially under Jurgen Klopp. Origi had a special bond with the German, who enthusiastically celebrated his last-minute goal in the Merseyside derby.

The striker was signed from Lille as an unknown in 2014 and made 175 appearances, scoring 41 goals, but became known for his influence off the bench, starting only 68 of those.

Origi announced his retirement on social media, saying: “My purpose as a player has been fulfilled. I fulfilled my childhood dream of playing on the biggest stage and winning the biggest trophy. I thank God for all of that.”

“To all the fans around the world who made me shine. Every iconic moment, every goal, every history we created together will be ours forever. Thank you to every club and to every coach and team-mate who has been by my side. It is you who have shaped me in ways far beyond the pitch.”

“It was a joy to represent my country, Belgium, while carrying my Kenyan roots. And to my family and those closest to me… without you, I would not be who I am today. I am forever grateful. Mission accomplished. Now I step into my next mission. The journey continues…”

After leaving Liverpool, where he also won the Premier League, Origi joined AC Milan on a free transfer, before returning to England in 2024 for a season-long loan move to Nottingham Forest. He won 32 caps for his country and scored three goals for Belgium, but he will forever be remembered for his exploits at Liverpool.

Speaking ahead of his final game at Anfield, Klopp described Origi as a “Liverpool legend” and said: “We can only do that with a few players that we know for sure.

“I think it’s just Div. So, yeah, I expect Div to get a special welcome or a farewell. He is and always will be a Liverpool legend to me, (and) one of the most important players I’ve ever played for.”
