Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during Sunday’s friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, has been released from hospital and is said to be doing “well”. The former Manchester United midfielder briefly lost consciousness and the match was abandoned.

There were major concerns for the 34-year-old, who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for the national team in 2021. He was then fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) device, allowing him to continue his career.

“I spoke to Christian this morning and he is fine. He is with his family and is doing well. He is expected to be discharged from the hospital and go home soon,” Danish national team doctor Morten Bosen said Monday morning. “We are looking after our players and staff and are in constant contact.”

Eriksen then provided an update through a statement. “I want to let everyone know that I’m fine and at home with my family,” Eriksen wrote on Instagram.

“As you can imagine, the shock from the ICD has had a huge impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this is a different situation than what happened in 2021. I am feeling well and have already begun my recovery.

“In addition to thanking all the players on the field and the medical team for their support and assistance, I am also extremely grateful to the doctors who have taken care of me and my heart over the years.

“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly its intended purpose of protecting me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing soccer with my kids.”

He received supportive responses from former United team-mates David de Gea, Luke Shaw and Donny van de Beek, former Inter Milan team-mate Lautaro Martinez and former Tottenham team-mate Lucas Moura.

Eriksen collapsed in the 65th minute as Denmark was beating Ukraine 2-1. Eriksen was able to leave the pitch on his own, but the friendly was called off.

Afterwards, Denmark coach Brian Riemer said: “Christian Eriksen waved to his teammates as he left the pitch. A few minutes before he fell ill, he had been in an argument with Ruslan Malinovsky and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong.”

“From that moment on, neither I nor the players on the pitch could continue.”

Eriksen was playing for Inter Milan when he fell in 2021, but Italy’s rules against ICD forced him to move after his recovery. He joined Brentford in 2022 and his impressive performances led him to Manchester United.

After three years at United, he moved to German side Wolfsburg last summer. In the 2025/26 season, he played in 34 games and contributed to Wolfsburg with 10 goals and 3 assists.
