Manchester United are targeting a number of summer signings, including midfield players, but Michael Carrick and the club’s leadership are keen to continue using the academy.

Manchester United are aiming to make five new signings this summer after signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who is set to become the first signing of the Michael Carrick era.

The Red Devils have just returned to the Champions League, having only played 40 games in all competitions last season, but they know the team will be under added stress over the next 12 months.

As a result, they have their eye on a number of new signings, with The Times reporting that a number of midfielders are being looked at. Atalanta initially signed a deal worth £35m to sign the Brazilian star.

In addition, they are also interested in Real Madrid’s Aurelien Choameny, West Ham United star Matheus Fernandes and Brighton’s Carlos Baleva. Elliott Anderson has also been linked, but Manchester City appear to be leading the race.

The club have already confirmed Rasmus Hjølund will leave Old Trafford permanently and are also eyeing a striker. Left-back is another position that has been mooted, with Newcastle star Lewis Hall being a potential target.

Despite their desire to acquire United’s squad, United’s hierarchy have made it clear, and Michael Carrick strongly agrees, that they cannot completely cut off young players’ paths to the first team. The former United player turned manager himself is a strong believer in using the academy.

Carrick is well-versed in the club’s traditions and immediately reinstated Coby Mainu upon taking over in January. He has returned to form and the club are hoping to see more young talent flourish after the likes of Shay Lacey got minutes last season.

Manager Ruben Amorim was criticized for failing to capitalize on the club’s young talent, while leaving Maynou on the bench and using the midfielder sporadically at best. Carrick’s appointment was well received by families who have players in the club’s academy, who felt he would make them more open to future possibilities.

United are also set to see more key players depart, which will free up space in the squad and free up funds for transfer plans. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana were all sold, while Casemiro left the club when his contract expired. Jadon Sancho is another player who will leave on a free transfer after a disappointing season on loan at Aston Villa.
