Despite the pain, Mikel Arteta is speaking soon about a return next season, with Arsenal’s board expected to support the Spanish manager in the transfer window. Ahead of a busy summer season, Express Sport sat down with Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta to explain what’s next.
£180m signing of attacking duo to strengthen front line
I felt that Arsenal’s biggest problem in Budapest was their lack of attacking power. PSG were able to call up Gonzalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola, while the Gunners’ off-the-bench options included Victor Gyoqueres, Noni Maduez and Gabriel Martinelli. To address this, Arsenal will need to spend a lot of money on forwards, with two possible options being Julian Alvarez and Rafael Leao. Considering Atlético Madrid value Alvarez at £130m, while AC Milan are said to want £50 for Leo, it won’t be a cheap price for the north Londoner. But it takes that much money to continually compete for big prizes.
3 players let go when reshuffle occurs
To make room for their arrival, Arsenal will have to say goodbye to some of their current attacking options. Martinelli hasn’t been able to establish himself as a regular in the side, and even when he does play, he’s mostly underwhelming in terms of goals and assists. Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus’ time at the club appears to be coming to an end, with a return to Brazil being mooted. Elsewhere, Arsenal could sign academy product Ethan Nwaneri to boost their bankroll ahead of an expensive summer.
Martin Odegaard stripped of captaincy, replaced by Declan Rice
The final changes do not need to involve player entry or exit, and can be accomplished internally. The time has come for Declan Rice to become captain and become the face of a new era at Arsenal. Martin Odegaard doesn’t scream leader or legend, but Rice has all the minerals to become an iconic figure for the 14-time English champion.
