Adidas is set to release a fourth commemorative Manchester United kit, according to reports. In 2027, United will celebrate 125 years since the club adopted the red, white and black colors that are closely associated with the club.

The Reds have traditionally operated with just three uniforms per season: the classic red home strip, the away kit, and a third uniform of a different color. But this year, Adidas is reportedly planning a “special” fourth kit that celebrates United’s storied heritage. The design pays homage to the club’s change from Newton Heath to Manchester United in 1902, when the team switched from green and gold jerseys to an iconic color scheme that is recognized by supporters and rivals alike to this day.

This comes from Footy Headlines, who claim there are two different versions of the monumental fourth kit. The first features a ‘Man United Red’ base and is expected to be paired with white shorts and black socks. The second version is thought to come in ‘Court Green’ and serves as a nod to the club’s original identity.

It remains unclear whether the Newton-Heath-inspired jersey will be worn by outfield players or if it will serve as a goalkeeping strip. Neither commemorative kit is scheduled to be released until 2027, which marks the 125th anniversary.

It is also thought that the kit is likely to be used in future Champions League matches and domestic cup competitions, unless United are eliminated from the Champions League or domestic cup competitions such as the FA Cup or League Cup by the time 2027 rolls around.

Adidas has produced several one-off United kits and alternate strips, but none have been used in competitive action. The brand has collected Lunar New Year shirts and digital EA designs, but a fourth kit for players to wear had not been attempted before since the partnership began in 2015.

One of the closest times the club came to this was in 2008, when United and Manchester City wore retro-inspired strips in the Manchester derby to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Munich Blitz.

The 125th anniversary of the red, white and black is sure to appeal to supporters who spend their money on United’s latest kit every year. Given the importance of this year, it is perhaps fitting that former United star Michael Carrick takes charge.

The former midfielder signed a two-year deal at the end of the Premier League campaign following his success in guiding the club to an impressive third-place finish. Next season, attention will turn to how Carrick can manage the Reds as they compete in four competitions, as well as his selections in his first transfer window as United manager.
