Pep Guardiola is set to reject a surprising approach from Inter Miami’s new manager, Sir David Beckham, but is likely to be open to becoming England manager one day. MLS co-owner David Beckham has identified Guardiola as his number one target to succeed Javier Mascherano, who resigned last month.
Beckham is well aware that having Guardiola join the club would represent a monumental coup for both Inter and MLS as a whole. The Spaniard will also be reunited with Lionel Messi, who played under him at Barcelona, which will of course greatly increase Inter’s marketing appeal. But Guardiola has made it abundantly clear that Beckham is fighting a losing battle in trying to convince him to return to the dugout immediately.
Guardiola will step down as Manchester City manager at the end of the season, ending a decade of unprecedented success at the Etihad.
He plans to step away from football to devote time to his family and regain his passion for the game.
Inter’s top brass would have welcomed the opportunity to meet Guardiola directly during the World Cup.
However, it is said that manager Guardiola has no intention of traveling to this summer’s tournament, but he has confided in his aides that he envisions his role as the next manager being at an international level.
The Football Association, which was keen to appoint Guardiola as England’s next manager following Gareth Southgate’s resignation in 2024, is not without its eyes on a new addition to the club, but reaching an agreement at the time proved unrealistic.
However, he remains firmly on the shortlist and would be an outstanding candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel when the time comes.
Tuchel has agreed terms to take England to Euro 2028 but knows his position will be under threat if the Three Lions disappoint at this summer’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, Guardiola is believed to be attracted to the England job and would seriously consider taking the job should the opportunity arise in the future.
