Pep Guardiola is no longer manager of Manchester City after a trophy-winning decade in charge, but is understood to have let people know where he will go next.
Manager Josep Guardiola is said to have “told a friend” that he wanted to become England manager in the future, just days after it was confirmed that he would be leaving Manchester City.
The legendary manager recently ended a decade in Manchester, winning 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League title.
It remains to be seen when and where the Catalan coach will return to the management team. However, the Mail reports that while Guardiola insists he will not be returning to club management anytime soon, he has expressed his desire to one day become England manager.
The report also notes that Guardiola has no intention of pursuing a new position in domestic football, although he is “inclined to change his mind”.
It has previously been suggested that Guardiola wants to secure everything he has to achieve at club level and lead his country to World Cup success.
But patience may be needed if Thomas Tuchel wants to manage England in major competitions, given that he signed a contract extension ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
The German head coach will lead England in his first major tournament this summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Tuchel’s contract was due to expire after the tournament, but the FA has signed a new deal with the former Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea manager, extending his term until the summer of 2028.
The Three Lions are preparing to travel to the United States to face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group stages of the competition.
City have yet to announce a replacement for Guardiola, but Guardiola’s former assistant Enzo Maresca is the frontrunner to take charge at the Etihad Stadium.
Asked about his successor, Guardiola said: “If the club tells me who he is, of course I will give him a call.” “I will tell him: ‘Be yourself and the club will support you unconditionally.’
“This is the biggest compliment and the biggest blessing for all the managers who have been here. In the bad moments you will be better protected than at any other club.
“Be yourself, be free, follow your ideas. Work hard and everything will fall into place.”
