Liverpool bosses, led by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, have taken the decision to sack Arne Slott and pursue Andoni Iraola after a disappointing season.

Arne Slott’s sacking from Liverpool was a complete surprise.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner to take over at Anfield following Slott’s departure. And the timing appears to be significant, as his availability may have been a factor in the timing of the decision to part ways with Slott.
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), said it was a “difficult decision” but the decision had been made following a review after the 2025/26 season. Slott won the title in his first year in charge but failed to reach that standard again last season, despite the club spending nearly £450m on new players.
Despite a hugely successful first season, Liverpool only managed to sneak into the Champions League places, fans began to pay attention to Slott. Slott is making plans for next season, has drawn up transfer plans and even publicly stated that he is discussing the club’s pre-season preparations.

Nothing in football can be called a shock, but it’s safe to say he didn’t see this news coming until the club made it official on Saturday. What’s more, the club could have moved to prevent fan favorite Xabi Alonso from playing had Chelsea been serious about sacking Slot earlier this month.
Iraola did a great job at Bournemouth, leading them to Europe, but decided to leave the club when his contract expired. Liverpool couldn’t wait, as the Spaniard is a target of Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, and there are obvious links with Iraola.
Ultimately, the decision to sack Slott was made by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. Hughes was Bournemouth’s technical director when they appointed Iraola and knows the 43-year-old well. Iraora is known as an aggressive and attractive brand of football.

Although Liverpool fans were fed up with Slott and his style of play, the Dutchman put in an incredible performance in his first season in charge as he won the title. Despite some accusations that they won the championship with former manager Jurgen Klopp’s side, they actually finished third and fifth in the past two years.
Slott came in and won, but he also knew he had to rebuild the team. If his two years had ended the other way, he would still have been considered a hero in the Kop. Instead, Slott won his first year with few changes to his team, then spent huge amounts of money on Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkes and Jeremy Frimpong. It took some time for the contract to be worked out while Isaac suffered an injury.

After the death of Diogo Jota, the club was also struck by tragedy off the pitch, which shocked the entire football world. Slott had issues with Mo Salah, but the two ended on good terms and the Egyptian player was on the decline. But it was a huge distraction.
The club has now accepted that this is a transition period and has decided to move in a different direction with Slot. In fact, it may have been Slott’s first season on the way to a successful second year. I hope fans remember what a great job he did overall.
Slott still has one year left on his contract with Liverpool and is in no rush to return to management, but will now consider his options for the future.
