Anthony Gordon has agreed to pay Newcastle £70m for his services and is ready to sign a five-year deal with Barcelona, Alan Shearer was surprised
Alan Shearer has admitted he is “surprised” that Newcastle were able to secure £70m from Barcelona for Anthony Gordon. The England forward is ready to join Barça after their victory over Bayern Munich.
Mirror Football understands that Barca are £10m more expensive than Bayern and will pay a £70m transfer fee for Gordon, who is under contract until 2031. His move puts Marcus Rashford’s future in Catalonia in doubt, with no agreement in place to turn his loan from Manchester United into a permanent £26m transfer.
Gordon has scored 17 goals and provided five assists in 46 games this season, particularly in the Champions League. Overall, he has made 152 appearances for Newcastle since arriving from Everton for £45m in 2022, scoring 39 goals and providing 28 assists.
Gordon’s contract runs until June 2030, so Newcastle could demand £70m. Despite this, club legend Shearer expressed surprise that Barça could afford to spend such a large amount of money, given that they are over £2bn in debt and are in talks with United over Rashford’s transfer fee.

Shearer told Betfair: “I think Newcastle were hurt by the[Alexander]Isak situation and they can’t ever be in that situation again.” “So obviously Anthony Gordon wants to leave, so I think the thinking on Newcastle’s side is, if that’s the case, we’ll do everything we can for him and then we’ll come up with a plan and make sure we don’t end up in that situation again.
“I think there’s a part of it…You never want to get bitten twice like last summer. I don’t know if they could have gotten more for him. I think now is the time for them to come up with a plan.”
“And if that’s the case and it suits Newcastle, if it’s the right deal and the right time, then yes, that’s fine. If it’s £70m or whatever it is, they’ve got a healthy return on him.

“I know he’s been scoring mainly in the Champions League this season. He’s scored six goals in the league, three of them penalties. But there’s definitely talent there, but if you have talent that’s not completely committed to it, you have to let them go and that’s what they’ve done.”
“I think it’s a good deal for both parties. The sooner the deal is done, the sooner Newcastle can move forward with their plans. I’m not upset at all about him leaving. I think when a player wants to leave and makes it clear that he has no heart in playing for the club anymore, that’s fine, you do what’s best for the football club.”
“There’s no one bigger than the club, so first and foremost it’s a good deal for Newcastle and a really good deal for Anthony Gordon. So good luck to him. I’m sure he’ll appreciate what he’s done so far. I think he’s definitely divided by his time at Newcastle. But yeah, good luck to him. I don’t have any problems with it.”
