Anthony Gordon is set to complete his move from Newcastle United to Barcelona as Manchester United wait to sign Marcus Rashford this summer
Anthony Gordon is set to join Barcelona after Newcastle United agreed a sale for £69.3 million plus add-ons, leaving Marcus Rashford’s future uncertain. Following a day of discussions between the clubs, Gordon is scheduled to undergo a medical as the move draws closer to becoming a reality.
The England international’s weekly wages are expected to double to around £300,000 as Barca spend big in the lead-up to the World Cup. The La Liga champions took a very different approach to dealing with the Magpies compared to their approach at Manchester United.
Thanks to a loan clause, they were able to sign Rashford for £26m, with the 28-year-old impressing after joining from United. However, Barcelona are trying to negotiate a lower fee in order to manage financial compliance in Spain.
Gordon’s preferred role is on the left wing, and he will be competing for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad against Rashford. However, it is claimed that manager Hansi Flick is open to signing both players this summer.
Rashford is said to have already agreed to leave nearly half his salary at Barça, but another loan has also been touted and now looks more likely. United will be hoping to sell him for the price agreed last summer.
It remains to be seen whether United’s leaders will accept another deal following Barcelona’s acquisition of Gordon. The Catalan club has shown its buying power but could also point to the transfer of Newcastle’s star player as the reason it cannot afford to spend more.
Gordon’s arrival could show that Barcelona are not in dire need of reinforcements for that position. Despite scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists, Rashford had already been dropped in and out of the starting XI.
This leaves United in a difficult position regarding Rashford’s future. The Academy product has a contract until 2028, but was only due to remain at the Camp Nou this summer.

Rashford spoke after winning the league with Barça and seemed to hint that although he had hoped to extend his stay, that was not a certainty. “This is the perfect ending I want,” he said.
“I’m very happy. I just want to enjoy today. I’m living in the moment. We’ll see at the end of the season.
“I came here to win, and we’re accomplishing this, so I’m very happy. It’s an incredible feeling.”
“We deserved it all season long. We were the best team. We had some bad times, but we always come back and fight to get better.”
