Former Liverpool star John Aldridge disagrees with Jamie Carragher who believes the Reds need to invest in attacking options in right midfield. Carragher recently said the club needed to focus on regaining the goals lost with Mohamed Salah’s departure.
But Aldridge believes Liverpool’s focus needs to be elsewhere. He said: “They may not end up spending as much as they did last summer, but it’s definitely going to be another big transfer window for Liverpool.”
“That has to be the case. The team is not good enough and we don’t have enough depth. That has been proven all season. For me, the priority simply has to be a holding midfielder.”
“We need players who can protect the back four, although I know it might not fit in with Arne Slott’s overall vision of having progressive players in the middle of the park.
“Liverpool almost always have one player like that in their team and we mustn’t forget that it was the signing of Fabinho in 2018 that took us from challengers to champions.”
“All season long the midfield was too open and the back four was left exposed too often. Ryan Gravenbirch is a good player but we’ve seen over the last 12 to 18 months that he’s not a number six. Having one in the team will free him up higher up.”
