Enzo Fernandes has been linked with a move away from Chelsea this year, with the Argentine having informed the club of his intention to leave, but the club will demand well over £100m for his contract.
Enzo Fernandes has informed Chelsea he wants to leave the club, but the Blues will demand £120m before allowing him to leave.
The Argentine has been linked with a departure all season, leading to him being dropped by former manager Liam Rosenior, but he has now revealed his intention to hold talks with the club and seek pastures new.
Fernandes moved to Chelsea after the last World Cup following his country’s success in Qatar. The west Londoners spent more than £100m to sign him from Benfica, but could still make a profit if the asking price is met.
The Argentine midfielder’s most talked about transfer destination is Real Madrid, with Fernandes’ agent Javier Pastore exploring potential destinations, with the Spanish capital being the preferred option, the BBC reports.
Chelsea will welcome new manager Xabi Alonso in pre-season, but Fernandes remains in the club’s plans for next season and only an offer that meets their assessment will change that. Fernandes scored 15 goals and provided a further seven assists, finishing runner-up in Chelsea’s Player of the Year award.
In March, Fernandes said: “I want to live in Spain. I really like Madrid. It reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live wherever they like. I want to live in Madrid. I can get by in English, but I feel more comfortable in Spanish.”
Real are known to be unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price unless their financial situation changes. They have also been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, and much may depend on the wishes of new manager Jose Mourinho, who will be making his second return to the Bernabéu dugout.
Chelsea could boast one of the best midfields in the Premier League, with Fernandes playing alongside Moises Caicedo, another player worth over £100m. Both companies are part of huge financial investments made by their current owners.
However, the club are no closer to the title and Stamford Bridge bosses admit they need to invest more in Premier League talent. Chelsea did not finish the season well, finishing 10th and failing to win any trophies. It came after a promising season in which they won the European Conference League and the Club World Cup.
