The Lewis family have vowed to rebuild trust with Tottenham supporters and are “fully committed” to bringing about meaningful change after successive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. Roberto de Zerbi’s Spurs, who have gone through three head coaches, avoided a devastating relegation by two points with a 1-0 home win over Everton on Sunday’s final day of the season.

Fans have frequently directed their anger at majority owner ENIC, run by the Lewis family and CEO Vinay Venkatesham, following a major 12-month shake-up. Long-time chairman Daniel Levy was invited to step down in September after the Lewis family commissioned a major overhaul of the club in early 2025. Levy has been Spurs’ key decision-maker for almost a quarter of a century, despite ENIC being majority owner.

In a letter to Tottenham fans, the Lewis family admitted they were “deeply disappointed” in recent seasons and accepted ultimate responsibility for the current situation, but promised that a rebuild had begun and investment would bring about “deep” changes.

“Dear fans, during our 25 years as owners, we have lived with you through the ups and downs of Spurs,” a statement from the Lewis family to the Press Association read.

“Finishing 17th this season and last season is not a reflection on the standing or potential of this football club. We are deeply disappointed and share your disappointment.”

“You and we expect more than this. We know that something like this must never happen again.

“Our approach to running the club is, and always has been, to rely on the experts to help us succeed.

“The problems we discovered were more serious than we realized and had been allowed to accumulate over the past several years.

“We know it has damaged trust and we have to restore it. As owners, we have ultimate responsibility for the situation the club is in.”

“We are also responsible for the rebuilding of Spurs. Our ambition is to restore the spirit of the club and bring back the exciting, fearless and bold football that we have always felt defined us.”

“That means football comes first and our board and executive team have developed a plan to achieve this goal.

“This requires investment in our team, our academy and our backroom capabilities, and we are fully committed to this.

“We are not selling the club. We are fully committed. We are investing in the club. We will find out more in the coming months.”

“We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuilding the club needs and you deserve has begun. The changes needed are profound. It will take time and commitment, but the changes are happening.”

“We know that actions speak louder than words.”

Since Levy’s departure, Vivian Lewis, her son-in-law Nick Boucher, and Charles Lewis have taken on more active roles.

Injuries have been a major factor in Tottenham’s last two seasons, with new performance director Dan Lewindon starting a medical overhaul at the club.

Lewindon is one of several appointments backed by the Lewis family over the past 12 months, with Raffi Muldsen also joining the City Football Group and set to take over as director of football operations shortly.

CEO Venkatesham was the Lewis family’s first big hire in April last year and PA understands there is strong support for him from within, despite the former Arsenal executive enduring a difficult first season at Tottenham.

Venkatesham was forced to rebuild Spurs’ football department midway through the season and is now surrounded by several key players.

Venkatesham told BBC Sport: “There have been some serious issues that the club have had to deal with football-wise. We know what they are. We’re working on it. We’re fixing them.”
