Ilkay Gundogan wants to continue playing beyond the age of 35, but admits he would like to be part of Manchester City’s management team in the future
Ilkay Gundogan is targeting a return to Manchester City to become part of the coaching staff.
However, Gundogan has ruled out being part of Etihad’s new management team following the departure of Josep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca is expected to replace Guardiola as manager this summer.
Gundogan still has 12 months left on his contract with Galatasaray and is hoping to play one more season with the Turkish club. But the German admitted he wants to become a coach after he retires and believes there could be a role for him at the Etihad. The 35-year-old is one of the most decorated players in City’s history.
The midfielder won 14 major trophies in his two years under Guardiola and captained City to a historic treble in 2023.

The former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund star said: “Of course there is a chance. Of course, it depends a little on my own decision and my own ambition on how I want to evolve after my playing days are over.”
“I feel like I still have a few really good years left, I’m still having fun and I want to play some more.
“But obviously thinking long-term, it’s no secret that I was starting to get my coaching badges and trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go in post-career.
“And it’s definitely 100 percent possible. I mean, this place has given me everything I wanted as a player, so why not try in a different role?”
