Anthony Gordon has reportedly finalized his preferred transfer destination this summer, with Liverpool and Barcelona said to be interested in the attacker. Gordon started the season well and was in great form for the Magpies, but injury concerns in March kept the winger out of the final few games of the season.
Two years later, they are said to be keen again, but this time they may face even tougher competition. La Liga champions Barcelona and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have joined the race for the 25-year-old and are serious about bringing him to the Camp Nou.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the England international is looking forward to a move to Barcelona, with Barcelona his ideal destination. Sporting director Deco recently visited London and is believed to have had a conversation with Gordon, who is attracting attention from the Catalan giants.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims Gordon and Barcelona have reached a complete agreement on personal terms. Barcelona are currently in direct negotiations with Newcastle and hope to conclude an agreement as soon as possible.
Manager Eddie Howe, who has himself been linked with a move away from St James’ Park, admitted Gordon’s final game for Newcastle could already be over. When asked if his absence from the starting lineup after his return from injury had anything to do with the noise, he explained: “At this stage of the season, part of what we do going forward is obviously looking to next year, so yeah.
“Anthony just came back from injury. I think the team has played well in his absence and there are some prospects for the future, but yes…no, nothing. No updates from me. These are discussions that could potentially be happening, but not with me.”
Gordon’s immediate focus is on helping England at next month’s World Cup, with the former Everton star named in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad. The Three Lions will play two warm-up games against New Zealand and Costa Rica before facing Croatia in the group stage. The 1966 champions then faced Ghana and Panama, and for the first time as a result of the expanded World Cup format, the finals would begin at the Round of 32 stage.
