Mason Greenwood decides next club as Manchester United set to earn millions | Soccer | Sports

Manchester United stand to benefit as Mason Greenwood looks set to move on to his next club after leaving Marseille this summer. The striker is set to leave France for Roma after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Greenwood’s impressive form in 2025/26 saw him score 26 goals and provide 11 assists in all competitions, attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. However, Roma appear to be in contact with the player’s father and are leading the race, with Greenwood also reportedly keen on the project.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim the prolific forward will end his stay in France after Les Fosens failed to qualify for Europe’s top club competition. Greenwood completed a £26.6m move from Old Trafford in 2024 after United decided he could no longer remain at the club.

The academy graduate was suspended by United in 2022 after being charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behavior. The 24-year-old denied the charges, which were later dropped, but spent a season on loan at Getafe before joining Marseille.

United are said to have included a sell-on clause in Greenwood’s original contract, giving him the right to pay him up to 50% of his future transfer fee. Marseille are reportedly seeking £43m for the striker, who is under contract until 2029.

Marseille are under pressure to sack players after missing out on Champions League qualification. The French club is said to be in a “precarious financial position” and needs to complete multiple sales by June 30 to satisfy French financial regulators.

Reports from Turkey suggest Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi wants to make the deal clear as part of his plans to reinvigorate the club’s prospects. Roma will hope that their existing relationship with Marseille will be advantageous.

Greenwood has previously made clear his desire to remain at the Stade Velodrome, but Marseille’s financial woes could make that difficult. After being named in Ligue 1’s team of the season, the forward admitted it had been a difficult period for the club.

“There have been some difficult times overall this season, especially in the last few months,” he said. “But personally, I think I had a good season.

“I’m delighted to receive this trophy because we have some great players in this year’s team. Ligue 1 is a great league.

“We’re playing a great game and for me it’s one of the best leagues I’ve ever played in. I hope we can stay.”
