Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is keen to join Arsenal in January, with talks reportedly accelerating between the two sides since the end of the Premier League season.

Arsenal have reportedly wasted no time in reigniting their interest in Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali after lifting the Premier League trophy. The Gunners won the title for the first time in 22 years, but are already planning ways to strengthen their squad for the 2026/27 season.

Tonali first emerged as a target for Arsenal in the January transfer window, when sporting director Andrea Berta was informed of the possibility of signing him. It is understood that the midfielder’s own agent has contacted Berta as Tonali is keen to continue playing in the Champions League next season.

Newcastle finished 12th this season, their worst result under manager Eddie Howe, and despite being under contract until June 2028, the £55m he signed from AC Milan in 2023 may not remain. In January, Manchester City, Juventus and Chelsea were all interested, along with Arsenal, but the Gunners appear to be looking to steal points from their rivals.

Italy’s Tuttomercato reports that Arsenal have resumed contact with Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Rizzo to try to establish the terms of the deal. The Gunners are looking for more depth in midfield, where Declan Rice has been overused following Mikel Merino’s injury.

Miles Lewis-Skelly has been drafted into midfield in recent weeks, Christian Norgaard is not trusted to play in important games and Martin Zvimendi’s level has fallen from the level he set earlier in the campaign.

Tonali’s agent Riso told Tottosport in February: “Newcastle are struggling to let Sandro go and he wants to take the club to the Champions League. We will evaluate him in the summer and decide what to do. Transfer talks will take place after that. We will see how the season ends and then decide what to do.”

Tonali has played 53 games in all competitions for Newcastle this season, contributing three goals and seven assists. In February, Magpies manager Howe insisted Tonali was “very happy” and said he would be surprised if he did not settle down.

Arsenal's Declan Rice was welcomed by Arsenal owners Josh Kroenke and Stan Kroenke.

But after winning the title, and even before they face Paris Saint-Germain in this weekend’s Champions League final, Arsenal’s traction is clear. Arsenal co-owner Josh Kroenke has stressed that his side do not want to stop after winning the title and breaking a run of second-place finishes for three years in a row.

After handing over the trophy to his team at Selhurst Park on Sunday, he told NBC: “Business never stops. We already have other teams stepping up and coming at us for next season.

“We need to be aware of that. We’ve already had some different conversations about different areas where we think we can improve on and off the pitch. We’re looking forward to getting that going this summer, but it’s going to be interesting because of the World Cup, but fortunately we’re all coming to the United States so we don’t have to travel.”
