Manchester United have been given a big push to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali after Juventus failed to qualify for the Champions League. United are hoping to sign Tonali in the summer transfer window, but there is expected to be stiff competition for his signature.
Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are among the other clubs linked with a move for the 26-year-old Italian international. Juventus are also interested in Tonali, but with the Old Lady failing to qualify for the Champions League, a move to Turin is unlikely.
Luciano Spalletti’s side went into their final match against Torino needing a win elsewhere and a good result to secure their place in Europe’s top competition next season. However, Juventus failed to live up to their own demands, surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw with local rivals Torino on Sunday.
As a result, Juventus finished in sixth place, earning them the fourth and final Champions League spot behind fifth-placed Milan and Como, and will qualify for next season’s Europa League.
This all but ended Juventus’ hopes of attracting Tonali to the club. Last week, reports emerged suggesting that Juventus would need Champions League football to lure him back to Italy.
United have received a significant boost in their attempts to push through a deal, as Juventus currently appear to be out of negotiations alongside former club AC Milan. The Red Devils could give Tonali a spot in the Champions League, with Michael Carrick’s side likely needing to fill Casemiro’s void.
United are targeting at least two central midfielders this summer as they look to deal with Casemiro’s departure and a growing list of games next season.
Ederson has been linked with a move to United for some time, with a deal likely to be completed this summer. Negotiations between United and Atalanta are progressing over a potential transfer fee of £43 million.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Choameni have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford as United look to strengthen their squad.
