Eddie Howe is under pressure as Newcastle manager after Newcastle finish 12th in the Premier League following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Fulham

Eddie Howe has vowed to stay on as Newcastle manager and keep fighting after a disappointing end to the season. Newcastle lost 2-0 to Fulham on Sunday, finishing the season in 12th place in the Premier League, far from the European places.

Goals from Issa Diop and Tom Cairney handed Newcastle defeat in west London. The Magpies had taken seven points from a potential nine going into the final game, but the loss brought an end to a difficult season.

With Josep Guardiola stepping down as Manchester City manager, Howe is the third longest-serving manager in the Premier League, behind Mikel Arteta and Marco Silva, who could leave Fulham. However, Fulham’s move past Newcastle into 11th place meant the worst finish for Howe’s Magpies.

He arrived in November 2021 and has so far led the team to 11th, 4th, 7th and 5th place finishes. Howe won the Carabao Cup with Newcastle last season and led them to the Champions League, but after four and a half years at the helm, some believe it is time for a change. However, the 48-year-old has no plans to resign.

“My resolve has never wavered from day one until today,” Howe told Chronicle Live. “No matter who you are, the unity that runs through a football club from top to bottom is important. We need that unity and planning.”

Newcastle are currently on summer break and have plenty of time to reflect. They are scheduled to return to work on July 13 for pre-season training, but Howe admits there is a lot to work on.

He said: “Whenever there is something to work on, we have to absorb it. If we deflect it and think it doesn’t concern us, we will never grow or improve. Reflection, analysis and learning are all part of development at any football club and there is definitely a lot to take and absorb from this season.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle co-owner Jamie Ruben shared his thoughts on the campaign on social media. “Thank you for the expedition support today,” he posted on X.

“Despite some great moments in the Champions League and other domestic cups, it was obviously a very disappointing end to an underwhelming season. We just couldn’t reach the level we should have and need.

“From the owners to the coaching staff to the players, all of us will be working tirelessly this summer to take our project forward, come back stronger and start the new season in the best possible way. We would like to thank all our supporters and everyone involved at Newcastle United for their support.”
