Tottenham relegated West Ham United to the Championship on the final day of the Premier League season. Despite goals from Tati Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson helping the Hammers to victory against Leeds United, Joao Parinha’s goal just before half-time sealed their place in next season’s top flight.
Spurs secured all three points for the third time at home in the league this season, with Parinha’s stunning effort heading just over the goal line after his header from a corner hit the post. The Lilywhites had further chances but were unable to secure a second win over Jordan Pickford.
Tensions rose inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the second half after shots by Castellanos, Bowen and Wilson, but Spurs held onto their lead and avoided a two-goal comeback. Antonin Kinski was largely unaffected by the visitors, while Spurs’ other goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was undoubtedly enjoying a busy afternoon.
That was until Tyrik George pulled off a sensational save in the dying seconds. Vicario got into an altercation with Seamus Coleman on the touchline midway through the first half, then jumped on Roberto de Zerbi’s back while celebrating Parinha’s winning goal.
De Zerbi was also particularly active on the sidelines, celebrating several missed chances for Everton with a few fist bumps before causing further uproar in the crowd. Those inside the stadium also serenaded the players in the final minutes, with their hard work not going unnoticed despite their disastrous season.
The implications of Tottenham staying cannot be ignored, especially given the potential financial implications of relegation to the Championship. However, you don’t have to worry about it, at least for the next few months.
The upcoming summer transfer window will be crucial for the club and it is clear that a major rebuild is needed. Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, who will leave Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively as free agents, have already been identified as targets.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are likely to leave the club, and the departure of key members of the first team is also being discussed. Even if the club remains in the top flight, the departure of one of them is certainly possible, in which case young talent Luka Vusković could join the team.
