Big names like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire have been disrespected by manager Thomas Tuchel, who has made cruel comments about the England squad ahead of the World Cup.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has been brutal and ruthless, including heavily calling up England’s World Cup squad.
The England manager let go Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Cole Palmer and brought back Ivan Toney after 12 months in the wilds of the Saudi Professional League. These are big decisions and big stakes. But this manager doesn’t have time to care about reputation, and even less what others think.
Toney, 30, was thought to be far from competing in the World Cup when he left Brentford for Al Ahir, but he only played just two minutes in his final appearance, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Senegal in June last year.
A year later, Toney has scored 42 goals and provided 11 assists as part of a three-strong attacking trio alongside Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins, who also returned from a cold.

With Palmer and Foden, there was no room for emotion or reputation. He threw them both away, even though he believed one of them would be missed. It’s worth noting.
Palmer has struggled to improve his form and fitness and is now paying the ultimate price. This player was one of the players who represented England at the last Euros. Now he is out.
Foden has barely played for Manchester City this season. But while England fans chanted “Phil Foden is on fire…”, he went into the final Euros as the Premier League’s best player, and now he is out of the picture.
There’s no room for Maguire. Or Luke Shaw. Forget how they played at Manchester United in the second half of the season. There is no room for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. Lewis Hall came out. There’s no Adam Wharton. Created by Noni Madueke.
Maguire’s England career ended with his absence. Compared to Palmer and Tony, that wasn’t all that surprising.
Back in March, Tuchel made it clear that Maguire was effectively his sixth choice, behind the likes of John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Mark Guehi and Dan Byrne. Jarrell Quansah returns.
Maguire said: “After the season so far, I was confident that I could play a big role for my country this summer. I am shocked and disappointed by this decision. I wish the players all the best.”
Tuchel has been hired to get England over the line, but he has no interest in making friends or popularity contests. Otherwise, the England manager would not have chosen Jordan Henderson. But he’s interested in good tourists and happy campers, and that’s what Henderson values.
But this is a world apart from the days of Gareth Southgate, who was accused of being too loyal and clinging too closely to trials and trusts over the years. Instead, it has the feel of Fabio Capello in 2010, when he lost the plot at the last minute and tried to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement.
Roy Hodgson was erratic heading into 2014. This is a big decision and Tuchel will be judged based on these decisions.
Aston Villa striker Watkins was left out of the squad in March but has continued his sensational form since then and is sure to feature.
Tuchel is said to have had a thorough and lengthy meeting with managers Anthony Barry and Justin Cochrane after the second of two friendlies against Japan in March.
So they decided they needed to take another look and potentially look outside of the 35-man names on the Japan and Uruguay teams.
Foden was given a chance but didn’t take it. It was then that Toney returned to the field, and it was then that Tuchel decided he was going to give it a go. He can live or die by his decisions, and he’s risking everything.
