Marcus Rashford remains in limbo, with Barcelona and Manchester United unable to agree terms for the 28-year-old forward’s permanent transfer this summer

Barcelona have agreed personal terms with Marcus Rashford, but negotiations with Manchester United to sign the forward at a bargain price are still stalled. Rashford wants to make his summer loan move permanent and is willing to make concessions, but United are adamantly refusing to negotiate.

Rashford made a huge impact during his loan spell, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in 48 appearances for Hansi Flick’s side. He helped Barça win La Liga and is happy in Catalonia.

Flick wants to keep the 28-year-old forward, but Barça’s financial situation means it won’t be easy to turn his loan into a transfer. Barca are trying to negotiate with United because they are not willing to pay the £26m clause in his original contract and would instead prefer another loan with a lower buy option next summer, when Rashford only has one year left on his contract.

Rashford’s contract with United is for him to earn around £325,000 a week until June 2028. Sport reports that he is willing to take a significant pay cut to secure a move from Old Trafford and the Catalan outlet, and that personal terms have been agreed.

However, Barcelona are finding United much more difficult to deal with. They are reluctant to reduce their £26m buy option and feel Rashford is already undervalued after such an impactful first campaign.

United have reportedly agreed to pay the transfer fee in installments over three years. However, given Rashford’s value will decline as his contract expires, they are reluctant to simply discuss a reduced fee or another loan.

What could work in Rashford’s favor is Flick’s apparent backing, with the former La Liga champion’s opinion highly valued. Flick has reportedly not been sold a replacement for Rashford, who has played consistently as a left winger.

“I’m really proud of everyone,” Flick said after winning the trophy. “For me, it’s really a family and I’m grateful for that. As a coach, it’s always tough because you have to manage the players and they have their own goals. But in the end it’s a matter of mentality and attitude and the team shows that in every training.”

“At the beginning of the season I talked about egos, but watching the training I always felt that we would be at the top level. The most important thing is how they play for each other. It’s unbelievable. And the people at Barcelona are really kind to us, which is something I really appreciate.”

Barcelona complete their away game against Valencia on Saturday and turn their full attention to the summer transfer window. Rashford is due to represent England at the North American World Cup and ideally would like to have decided on his future at the club by then.
