Casemiro ‘closer’ to signing new club contract ahead of Manchester United final match | Soccer | Sports

Casemiro is reportedly keen on a move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami after his contract with Manchester United expires, with sources suggesting he is getting closer and closer to signing with MLS.

The Brazilian midfielder admitted in January that this would be his last season at Old Trafford. The 34-year-old, who joined from Real Madrid four years ago in a deal worth £70m including add-ons, bid an emotional farewell to the ground at the weekend during his final home away trip. It has been widely reported that he could move to the United States when United’s season ends this weekend.

According to The Athletic, Casemiro’s preferred destination is Inter Miami, who are said to be “close” to signing him on a free transfer.

Nevertheless, the report suggests considerable obstacles. LA Galaxy currently hold discovery rights to negotiate with the experienced midfielder and have already made several contract offers for him.

The provision, which gives clubs priority in signing certain players, exists to prevent MLS teams from competing against each other over the same hot targets.

Previous disagreements have resulted in each club paying compensation for the discovery rights, but neither LA Galaxy nor Inter Miami currently have a designated player slot for Casemiro.

Any deal that brings the multiple Champions League winner to Miami would need to be worth less than $2m (£1.48m) unless one of the club’s three player slots becomes vacant. Lionel Messi currently occupies one of those positions in Beckham’s team.

Casemiro could make one more appearance before departing when United travel to Brighton, but Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest was his last appearance at Old Trafford.

The midfielder thanked both the club and the supporters after the match, sharing a heartfelt message on social media saying: “In life there are places we pass through… and there are places that become part of us. Manchester will forever be my home.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the city, the club and our supporters. The last four years have been unforgettable and filled with moments that my family and I will cherish for the rest of our lives.”

“There are not enough words to describe the happiness and warmth we felt here. Thank you for all the cheers, all the memories and for making us feel at home from day one. Forever the Red Devils.”
