Michael Carrick is set to become Manchester United’s permanent manager, but no announcement has been made as negotiations continue regarding backroom staff.
Manchester United are close to confirming the appointment of Michael Carrick, but an announcement is thought to have been delayed due to an increase in backroom staff.
The Red Devils have reached an agreement with Carrick, with the former player penning a two-year contract with the option of an additional year. It is a reward for his excellent interim performance which has lifted the team to third place.
Carrick’s agent Joe Tang was at United’s Carrington training ground on Thursday. The Manchester outfit had hoped to confirm Carrick’s promotion over the weekend, but The Sun reports that an announcement is likely to be made this week.
Carrick wants to retain the backroom staff he acquired when he was first appointed. They have been integral to Carrick’s success, with former England number two Steve Holland and Carrick’s Middlesbrough assistant Jonathan Woodgate proving to be hugely influential.
Jonny Evans returned to United after a short spell as Carrick acquired him. Travis Binion has also joined the first-team coaching structure. He previously served as lead coach of Manchester United’s Under-21 team and head of academy player development and coaching.

United bosses are willing to give Carrick a contract beyond this season, but negotiations are still ongoing. The Dutchman has only signed on to stay at Old Trafford until the end of the campaign, but reports suggest he will stay.
Carrick had a lot of praise for Holland, saying, “He’s a very smart guy, Steve, and he says the really important things at the right time. And I think his overall calmness and calmness is the same for me, for the staff, for the players, for everyone. And I think it’s all that, a dynamic that makes it a little bit different.”
Carrick has won 11 of his 16 games since replacing Ruben Amorim. United said their original plan was to keep the former player in charge until the end of the season before looking for a longer-term successor. But his results made it impossible to ignore him.
Speaking after the 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest, Carrick said: “We’ll find out over the next few days. Today was about the game and getting the right result and some players shone. Whatever the news is, we’ll find out in the next few days.”
