Allegation: Southampton have been charged by the EFL after a performance analyst reportedly filmed and photographed Middlesbrough’s training sessions. The analyst was arrested and forced to delete the footage, causing a huge scandal.

Middlesbrough excluded: Despite being the victim of spying charges, Middlesbrough was refused permission to attend an independent hearing or give evidence. Disappointed by this exclusion, Boro released a bombshell statement claiming that this action directly undermines the integrity of the sport and fair competition.

Expulsion demands: Southampton beat Boro 2-1 on aggregate to reach the play-off final, but Middlesbrough demanded Saints be expelled from the centerpiece of Wembley. They argue that sporting sanctions to prevent Southampton from playing are the only appropriate response to deter future misconduct.

Possible return and delay: If the Independent Disciplinary Commission upholds the charges and expels Southampton, Middlesbrough are likely to replace Southampton and face Hull City. However, if an appeal from Southampton is expected, contingency plans will be activated and officials will be forced to change the date of the play-off final from Saturday, May 23 to Tuesday, May 26.

Severe financial penalties: The commission may choose large fines instead of expulsion. Leeds United were fined £200,000 for a similar incident in 2019, but under the tougher new rules Southampton face even harsher penalties, with the fine potentially reaching millions of pounds.

Future point deductions: Saints may be subject to point deductions, but their application will depend on their promotion status. If they lose to Hull, they could start the next Championship season with negative points. If they win promotion, the penalty will only apply on their eventual return to the EFL.

Coaching staff suspended: Coach Tonda Eckert and her staff have come under intense scrutiny for their perceived spying. If collusion is discovered, regulators could order a long-term touchline ban or a complete suspension of football activities.

Verdict status: The independent commission has met to discuss the outcome and a final decision is highly anticipated. Southampton remain hopeful that the committee will find them innocent, dismiss the charges completely and ensure their scheduled appearance at Wembley is not delayed.
