Michael Carrick has paid tribute to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after he equaled a Premier League record with his 20th assist of the season.

Fernandes equaled Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry’s top record, and the manager said: “I think he coped really well. I was watching and wondering what was going on in his head. The way he did it was a really great moment for everyone. Credit goes to him for that. He always puts the team first. It’s a great result.”

And after scoring Brian Mbeumo’s decisive goal in a 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest, Fernandes thanked his team-mates and set his sights on dominating the record books.

He said: “When we talked about it, everyone knew it was important. They tried to score off my passes. I’m very happy to get the assist and win and finish the season on a good note.”

“We reached 20 points today. Now we have one more game to go. It was our best result in the Premier League so far, so I’m very happy.”

United’s victory ensured they finished third in the Premier League, with Carrick expected to sign a two-year deal in the coming days to confirm his long-term appointment. “(The contract situation) is pretty clear. It’s the same thing. The situation will become clearer in the next few days,” he said.

“Whatever the news is, you’ll know it right away.”

And Carrick was delighted with the thrilling victory, which saw him win 11 of the 16 games he has played this season.

“It was a good day. I think we were really intentional about finishing a little higher. I think we’ve made really good progress as a group, as a team and as a club. It’s easy to get to this stage, but there’s no extra sparkle there. So I think it was a good day for us to finish like that for a lot of reasons, yeah.”

The win was Casemiro’s last appearance at Old Trafford after four years.

After the match, the emotional Brazilian said to the crowd, “I want to thank the players, the staff, everyone. But the best thing about this club is the fans. Thank you.”
