Tuchel brings back sacked England stars ahead of World Cup, Tony offers hope | Soccer | Sports

Manager Thomas Tuchel intends to add three strikers to England’s squad for the World Cup, which could pave the way for Ollie Watkins. England manager Tuchel will announce his 26-man squad for the trip to the United States on Friday, but his attacking options remain the subject of intense debate ahead of the World Cup.

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane is undoubtedly guaranteed a place as England’s captain, top scorer and talisman, with the striker certain to be one of the first names on the team sheet. However, Tuchel is expected to allow three strikers to be selected in his 26-man squad, with fierce competition for the remaining two spots.

Aston Villa forward Watkins was left out of England’s last squad in March but has responded admirably, scoring nine goals since that disqualification, including four in his last three games.

This has caught the attention of manager Tuchel, with reports suggesting he may be included on the 55-man provisional list submitted to FIFA last Monday, and Watkins appears to be the leading candidate to secure the position.

Tuchel has personally been impressed with Watkins’ performance, mentality and determination, and the opportunity to reinstate him came ahead of Friday’s squad announcement.

Previously, some England managers had chosen just two traditional centre-forwards in their 23-man squads, but the tournament’s expanded groupings, with 48 teams competing in challenging weather and climate conditions, have allowed more flexibility.

This could create an opportunity for overlooked striker Ivan Toney, who has had an incredible run in the Saudi Pro League and has established himself as a penalty specialist ahead of a potential shootout.

Brighton’s Danny Welbeck remains a strong candidate, with Tuchel mentioning him many times as someone he admires for both his qualities and his attitude.

Tuchel brought Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke into his squad in March, but the Tottenham striker is currently sidelined with injury and the Leeds player has left camp after making just one appearance.

Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold could end up on the periphery of the 26-man squad despite injury concerns surrounding Tino Livramento.

Tuchel also turned his attention to recently recovered Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who featured in the FA Cup final despite his team losing to Manchester City on Saturday.
