Manchester United star Casemiro has declared the city to be his ‘forever home’ after an emotional farewell to Old Trafford. The 34-year-old will leave United when his contract expires in June, bringing an end to his four years at the club.
After the final whistle, the midfielder took to the pitch with his family and addressed the supporters, thanking them for their support since his £60m move to Real Madrid in August 2022. Although Casemiro missed the opportunity to hold a press conference, he later expressed his heartfelt gratitude on social media.
“There are places we pass through in life…and there are places that become part of us,” he writes. “Manchester will always be my home.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the city, the club and our supporters. The past four years have been unforgettable, and for me and my family, it has been a moment that will never be forgotten.”
“There are not enough words to describe the happiness and warmth we felt here. Thank you for all the cheers, all the memories and for making us feel at home from day one. Forever the Red Devils.”
Casemiro leaves Old Trafford having won two honours, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, during his time at United. His arrival under manager Erik ten Hag has breathed new life into the Red Devils’ 2022-23 season, and after enduring a difficult period in his second and third seasons, he has been exceptional this term, scoring an astonishing nine goals.
“I think he’s been great for us, for me personally and as a group,” Carrick said ahead of the match against Forest. “I think what he’s given us, like I said before, that clarity will help us see the situation, and I think it will help us settle our heads into a place where he’s going to give absolutely everything to know in all aspects that at the end of the season it’s going to be over.”
“As I said before, I think the way he went about it is a credit to him and it would be easy to go in the other direction because it’s so close to the end and it’s so clear, but he’s fully invested and fully supported our staff with the performance he’s had.
“He obviously had his ups and downs over the years, just like we all go through in football, but it was great to finish so strongly and see the connection he had with the supporters.”
Casemiro has not yet revealed his next destination. MLS club Inter Miami have announced that they wish to sign the midfielder on a free transfer.
