The SPFL condemned Celtic supporters who stormed the pitch on Saturday, while insisting referee Don Robertson did not end the match prematurely. Hundreds of Celtic fans sprinted onto the Parkhead surface after Callum Osmund scored the decisive third goal to seal the Scottish Premiership title against Hearts. Fans mocked some of the Jambos players, and Derek McInnes and his team returned to Edinburgh without fulfilling their post-match media duties.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill told his press conference that in the chaotic situation he was told by the fourth official that there was still one minute left to play. However, league officials confirmed that Whistle’s Robertson had indeed completed the process.

They said in a statement: “In light of speculation about the outcome of the match, we would like to clarify that we were informed by the match referee prior to the presentation of the trophy that the match was over and not abandoned.”

“We would also like to thank the referee and his excellent team of match officials for their calm response on such a dramatic day.”

Regarding the final whistle, they said, “We completely condemn the scene where a large number of Celtic supporters invaded the field.

“While we await a report from the match delegation regarding the specific incident that occurred, it is completely unacceptable for supporters to enter the match field under any circumstances and would put those attending and working on the match at risk.

“We note that it has been an offense to enter the pitch in England and Wales since 1991.

“I would urge anyone with information about suspected criminal activity to contact Police Scotland.”

Describing this as a thrilling conclusion to the campaign, they went on to say: “Congratulations to Celtic on winning the William Hill Premiership in the most exciting circumstances and our condolences to everyone at Heart of Midlothian on what has been a fantastic campaign.”

“This match showcased Scotland at its best and the drama and excitement for which it is well-deserved.

“The world’s attention was on the climax of the Glasgow and William Hill Premiership, with millions of viewers watching the match on Sky Sports and around the world.”
