Wayne Rooney accused of being a ‘hard Man United fan’ by BBC co-star | Soccer | Sports

Wayne Rooney was accused of being a “vicious” Manchester United fan after Manchester City beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final. Antoine Semenho’s second-half backheel secured a 1-0 win and secured Pep Guardiola’s 20th trophy of his time at City at Wembley Stadium. Oasis duo Liam and Noel Gallagher were among those celebrating under the arch. The brothers are well-known City fans and are often spotted at matches.

BBC cameras caught the pair celebrating in a private box, with pundit Micah Richards saying: “I see the City Boys over there. Are those Liam and Noel? They’re always in the big final.” The Beeb host Mark Chapman said with a laugh: “That’s a pretty safe bet!” before Richards replies, “Chappers, you have better eyesight than me!” However, Rooney, United’s all-time top scorer, opined: “I say about Liam and Noel, I never saw them there when City didn’t win anything.”

But former City defender Richards hit back: “What? They were there!” Rooney replied, “I didn’t see it.” Richards labeled Rooney bitter, saying: “We have footage of that! Now he’s just blushing bitterly.”

But Rooney praised United’s neighbors for taking chances against a struggling Chelsea side and pushing them all the way. He added: “It wasn’t a great game. I thought Chelsea were good.

“With the quality of Manchester City, you know sooner or later one of their superstars is going to open up a chance. That goal was unbelievable. Chelsea had a few half-chances and screamed penalties that weren’t penalties. You just know City can create that one chance.”

Daniel Sturridge, who was standing alongside Rooney and Richards, said: “Chelsea were very disciplined. They needed their moments of brilliance. The little movements from[Erling]Haaland and the delicacy of Semenyo’s flicks were instinctive.”

“This is what it takes to win a title like this. Again, Bernardo Silva works tirelessly for his team-mates. He has put in a lot of effort. Man City keeps getting stronger and stronger. It’s been a successful season for them in terms of trophies.”

Rooney wore a cast on his left hand during the BBC interview due to his injury. And in a segment on the Beebs Wayne Rooney Show podcast, while footage of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saving a penalty was shown, he explained:

“Look at this for the sake of preservation. I saved (the penalty), but I hurt my hand, so I’m seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery. By the way, I’m not wearing my wedding ring because my finger is swollen, just in the newspaper! They know it’s going to be a big problem. It hurts, but it’s okay.”
