Mac Allister was left sprawled out on the grass after an off-the-ball collision with an England defender. The 27-year-old appeared to raise his hand towards the centre-back. Mr Konsa reacted by grabbing the Liverpool man by his shirt and pulling him towards his face before he fell to the ground.
The incident was confirmed by VAR and the Villa defender escaped sanction from referee Chris Kavanagh. Play was halted while Mac Allister remained on deck, with head coach Arne Slott appearing to gesture towards the affected area, urging the Liverpool midfielder to get back on his feet.
After watching the replay, Carragher said: “Yeah. Honest to God. Honest to God. He goes into every game with something wrapped around Mac Allister’s ankle, which normally doesn’t happen.
“It’s embarrassing. Stand up. Honestly. It would be embarrassing to send Konsa off for something like that. Mac Allister knows that. We’ve all seen the replays. We all know what Konsa did. He knows he can’t get away with this.”
From the resulting corner kick, Liverpool’s first shot from outside the area was blocked by Giorgi Mamadashvili, giving them a two-goal lead. Georgia’s shot-stopper also refused the rebound, but Watkins was in perfect position to bundle the ball and cross the line.
Things got even worse for Liverpool in the closing stages when John McGinn fired into the top corner.
While victory for Unai Emery’s side means they qualify for the Champions League, the Reds will have to rely on Bournemouth’s inability to close the gap after beating Brentford on the final day of the season.
Virgil van Dijk pulled one back with his second goal of the night, but it was yet another testing night for Liverpool’s beleaguered head coach.
Carragher added: “He’s the person who will be asked to fix Arn Slott because we have too many players who are physically and mentally weak.”
“This result does nothing to support supporters’ feelings about his current position.”
