Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand fired shots at each other on social media after the former admitted Casemiro’s 2024 comments went a little too far.

Rio Ferdinand claimed Jamie Carragher has made “more U-turns than Keir Starmer” after admitting his criticism of Casemiro two years ago had gone too far.

One of the most talked-about comments was when the Sky Sports pundit told Casemiro to “leave football before you leave” after his below-average performance in the defeat to Crystal Palace. Carragher suggested the Manchester United star needs to go to MLS or Saudi Arabia.

After feeling like his days at the top level were over, Casemiro has since rediscovered his best form. The Brazilian will leave Old Trafford this summer but has had his best season since moving to England, playing a key role in helping the team qualify for the Champions League.

Carragher’s 2024 comments have been hurled at him in recent months as the United midfielder proves he is more than capable of mitigating it in the Premier League, and he publicly claimed the criticism was “disrespectful”.

As a result, Carragher reconsidered his comments and accepted the fact that some of them had gone too far, leading to Ferdinand teasing the former Liverpool man.

Carragher told the Telegraph: “We have to admit that the implication that Casemiro is “done” at the highest level is too harsh and premature.”

He added: “This week Casemiro suggested that what I said was ‘disrespectful’, which is fair enough. I counter and say there was no disrespect intended, but everything he says in response comes with that territory. Quite the contrary. Thanks to his illustrious career, it was natural to compare Casemiro to the very high standards he set for himself.”

Carragher insisted United would not repeat the ploy of signing players in their 30s on high-salary, four-year deals, underscoring the fact that they know a move for Casemiro is a step too far.

In response to Ferdinand, a Sky Sports pundit responded: “It’s not a complete U-turn, but I commend Casemiro for taking good care of himself while playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world for 350,000 a week. We’re waiting for a complete U-turn on Infantino and his support for World Cup ticket prices.”

Mr Ferdinand, who attended the World Cup draw, claimed he was a “people person” and wanted things to be “accessible”, but suggested the high ticket prices were “justified” because the product was on sale.
