Bruno Fernandes admits that he has always been a player who values his heart.
His devilish grin after giving his team-mate another chance set the script for Manchester United’s rollercoaster season. However, there were moments when Fernandes’ frustration became clear when things did not go United’s way. United are scheduled to return to the Champions League next season, but they were eliminated from the domestic cup competition this season and have not featured in Europe.
They changed managers as Ruben Amorim left before Michael Carrick helped revive the whole season. If there was a frown on Fernandez’s face before, he is now smiling again. He is very passionate about United, the club and the connection with the fans.
That’s why Fernandes always wants what’s best for United and that’s what drives him. He remains hungry for success. That’s what makes him a special player, person and captain.

Fernandez, 31, said: “I’m very bad at hiding my emotions! I really show what I feel and I’m not afraid of it. Some people take it positively in one direction, some people take it negatively. But I can’t change who I am. It’s instilled in me and I can’t change it from one day to the next. I can’t just become a different person. I’m not very good at hiding my emotions. And I’m not afraid of it. Some people take it positively, some people take it negatively. But I can’t change who I am from one day to the next.”
“You can adapt, you can improve, you can learn, and I’m doing that every day. Obviously I can be a better player, a better person, a better captain, a better teammate, and I’m always going to do that until the end of my career.”
“Especially if you’ve been at a club for a long time, it can feel very difficult. Sometimes people want to see new faces, new people coming in and trying to win and recreate what other players have done in the past.
“But every time I step on the pitch at Old Trafford, I really feel the love and support of the fans, because they believe in me as one of their own. And I always try to recreate for them what they have seen time and time again when they come to Old Trafford. I just try to do my best to make them proud and at the same time try to make sure we are as successful as possible.”

United’s glory days are always a reminder of past successes, but they also serve as an inspiration for the current team to win big trophies again.
Fernandes has won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with United, but he clearly wants more than that. And I am honored to join Wayne Rooney, George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Teddy Sheringham and Roy Keane in winning the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award.
But he is also desperate to follow in the footsteps of these legends by winning the biggest trophy.
“I want to achieve everything that the players have achieved at the club in terms of winning. But it’s very important for me to spend this award with them and I’m not going to hide it. It’s always been an award for me. That’s always been my goal. I’ve never hidden it. Like I said before, I’m not very good at hiding things!”
“I always say what I want to achieve. What I want to achieve is to win the league and win the Champions League.”

He has 19 assists and has two games left to break the record. There were some great assists as well. That pass to Brian Mbeumo after a drive from midfield in the Manchester derby had to be the best one ever?
Fernandes added: “There are a lot of games that I like from this season. People talk a lot about set-pieces, but a lot of them came from set-pieces, and when I see Casemiro score or get a header, he tells me exactly where he wants the ball to go.
“Sometimes it’s more difficult than doing a run where you’re like 40 or 50 meters with the idea of moving the center back and moving Brian to the wrong side to give Brian space. Sometimes it’s more difficult because he still has to have the quality to head the ball in because he has to put the ball exactly where he wants it, just like Brian had to put the ball in.”
“But in terms of certain aspects of the game, the change of manager, a difficult few weeks, there were two games before that that didn’t go our way. We played away to Burnley and won, but we were knocked out of the FA Cup and had to play City at home, who we know are our big rivals.
“Also, this is a very important game, an important game for us to turn things around and do things differently this season.”
